Kurukh :

 Kurukh(Oraon) are a tribal (Adivasi) people of Bihar, Jharkhand, Orissa, Chhattisgarh and West Bengal,  Assam, Andaman & Nicobar island, Tripura, U.P. states of India. They are also found in Bhutan, Nepal, Bangladesh, Srilanka, Marisus and U.S. countries of the world. Some well educated Kurukhs have got better job in developed countries, as Britain and America, and settled there". There are about 90,000 people reside in Dhinajpur, Rangpur, Bogra and Rajshahi districts in Bangla Desh.

According to the government record of India 1997, population of the Kurukh tribes are 20,53,000(Oroan -18,34,000, Kisan - 2,19,000). About 25 percent of the population are Christians, majority of the educated, have became Christian. The language of the Kurukhs is known as Kurukh, belongs to the the Dravidian family, and is most closely related to Brahui and Paharia.

Kurukhs worship different symbols of the nature. Sun is considered only as symbol of God's glorious power and brightness, they say it ?Beri Belas?.  They believe a supreme god, Dharme or Dharmesh exists in the sun. Karma and Sarhul are two main festival of Kurukhs. Karma festival is celebrated, when the rice is ready for planting out and it is the renewal of vegetation. Sarhul festival cannot be done till the sal tree gives the flowers for the ceremony. Sarhul is associated with praying for the fertility of land and a good paddy harvest.
